Jeroen Henneman can draw in space. His sculptures work like drawings, but they are sculptures.
Henneman: ‘The lines and drawings on spotless paper sometimes seemed to float in space in my mind. Then I thought: If I saw those lines out of wooden sheet material, each line separately and then connect them again, in the original configuration of the drawing, then the drawing can stand upright, but now in space. The paper is then no longer the carrier of the lines, but the space.’
The strength of Henneman’s standing drawings lies in their extreme simplicity. His simplest subjects are often the strongest. Simplicity is an essential part of his work. Together with his drawing skills and sense of perspective, fascination for space, for light, dark and shadow, they are the basis of all his work.
